Szent Biblia (Holy Bible) . Utrecht, 1737.
The collection of Zsuzsanna Bethlen (1754-97), wife of Sámuel Teleki, has a number of 1,200 volumes, written in Hungarian. The Holy Bible published in Utrecht in 1737 is one of the curiosities of the Teleki-Bolyai Library’s bible collection, and it was always inherited by the female members of Zsuzsanna Bethlen’s family. This book was well respected within this family that had a fondness for books, and it was destined for long-time use, as the beautiful Transylvanian Baroque binding, the iron mounting and fasteners also show.
On the flyleaf Sámuel Teleki had noted the most important events of his life and according to the time’s customs the birth dates of his children. After his wife’s death this became Teleki’s favourite Bible.
On the interior of the cover there is Zsuzsanna Bethlen’s book plate, the unified Bethlen and Teleki coats of arms and the family motto: “Deus providebit”.
